I'm reading Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" on the stairmaster this morning at the gym, this beautifully, terrifying, horrific story about "the kid" and his journey through the south during the 1850s and the horrifying acts that took place during that time on the Mexico-Texas border.

Have you ever heard the story of the person who got the game winning monopoly piece off his McDonald’s cup and anonymously mailed it to a Children’s Hospital?  Forgoing millions, he/she gave without asking for any type of credit or appreciation.  The act of giving itself was enough for him/her.

There are so many things to figure out, I can hardly identify a beginning point. Did you have a miserable childhood? O, what  relief--I did too. You say your mom died before you reached puberty? Um hum. Got that. Your sister died in early middle-age, the one you meant to live with into your old age, to walk around the town with, holding hands and speaking cheerfully to strangers? Yeah, I hear you. Father and step-mother abandoned you when you reached eighteen (making your child negative-two-months, but still an entitity to be reckoned with)? Um, yes.

It's scary being alone at night.

Every bump you hear is something out to get you. Something changes when the lights go off, almost like the darkness is a license for all things bad to happen. It's amazing how much difference turning on the light makes. The only problem with the lights is that they keep me awake all night.

I think I'm in love with you. Always on time, you arrive with the added pleasure of late sleeping and spare time to linger in pajamas over a cup of piping hot coffee. I particularly enjoy welcoming your weekly arrival by creating a hearty homemade breakfast while I tune into the Phantom Gourmet and TV Diner. Without the added "tomorrow is Monday" stress that your pal Sunday morning brings, Saturday morning, I just wanted to thank you for being you.

Love always,
Your biggest fan

Hello friends,

It's been so long here, and I was barely here to begin with, that it seems oddly delightful and a bit unfamiliar be back--like wearing the pair of gorgeous navy blue stilettoes that I own and have only worn once.

This time I hope I'll be sticking around and making a fairly regular habit of sharing things with you...

I remember when I fell off my pedestal.  It was not too long after my second child was born.  When my husband and I were newlyweds we often talked excitedly about how we wanted to raise our children.  We read lots of books and said, “oh yes, this is how we want to do it!” or “oh, we’ll never do that to our kids!”  We would sit in restaurants and sneer at parents who couldn’t control their kids.  We would say “if only they would say or do X, their kids wouldn’t act like that; when we have our kids it’ll be differe

I must be old school when it comes to music videos! I love the sound of Lady GaGa and I love her outrageous outfits, and her powerful lyrics that hit home but that last music video that I just watched on her website “Telephone – (Official Explicit Version) featuring Beyonce’ was way over the top for me! She really does ‘push the envelope’ when it comes to society’s acceptance of what is tolerable on America

Today, I became a Skirt!Setter.

It happened while I was at work typing number after number into a dull grey computer screen. I sent in my application while sitting in my small, quiet cubicle (which is almost as grey as the computer screen). And I waited in full anticipation until, alas, I saw the news. And, as I suspected, when I received the “Congratulations!” e-mail from Skirt!, all I wanted to do was walk out of the office and hole up in a comfy corner with a hot cup of caffeinated something, and write all of my thoughts on paper.

Do you catch your kids sneaking books to school, reading after bedtime, or walking while reading?

If so, whaddya reading this post for?  You don't need these tips - go read something else.  But if you struggle to get your kids to read, carry on.

If the experience of raising 3 book lovers is any indication, this stuff works:

Savannah, GA is home to the second largest St. Patrick's Day celebration in the country, second only to New York.  The city's website estimates that approximately 600,000 people infiltrate the city to take part in the drunken spectacle.  I took this photo at 11 a.m. as I rode past this guy on East Broughton Street.

Do you know what Muga is?

It's not sushi. Or some strange animal.

Muga: "is the state in which you are doing whatever you are doing with a total wholeheartedness, without thinking of anything else." -The Sky's the Limit by Dr. Wayne Dyer

Muga is total present-moment living. I read about it in Dyer's book when it's talking about zen and personal peace.

On the drive home last night, as was inevitable, I found something to annoy me. The bumper sticker on the car next to me read “Who Rescued Who?” printed over a paw print.

“Who rescued WHOM?” I growled out my window. The driver, understandably, jumped and threw me a wide-eyed expression—as if this had never happened to him before.

Right so, here I am.  Sort of a mini dream come true.  I'm actually blogging for someone other than my own blog.  Pinch me now I must dreaming!  I'm so excited.  I almost stood up at my desk and yelled Woohoo (Vicki from RealHouseWives style)!  And then I thought- um I have to post.  What should I say?  How do I properly introduce myself to this awesome community.  I could provide you my life story- it's kinda fun.  No too cliche.  I could provide you an insight to my life via my medical history...it's long and hilarious.&nbsp

Right now, I'm watching a documentary on E! about Spring Break.  I would say that I'm sure you remember this 'ritual' during your college years, but considering the amount of alcohol some of us consumed, you very well may not.  :) This show is about tragedies that have happened during this week of debauchery, which reminds me of my own 'good times'.

Do you ever get a song in your head, and you can't get it out? More often than not, is it a song you absolutely can't stand and the sound of a jackhammer at 3 am would be more welcome?

Well I finished every single short story by Raymond Carver in the book of his collected works that I picked up at the library as part of my 26 books for my 26h birthday challenge.

Carver is a literary genious and I loved every single story I read. I'm not exaggerating either, I loved them all. They were all so different, so vibrant, so telling ... it was just good writing.

Good Morning Skirtsetters?

Something came over me...I was in a heavily densed fog...my judgement was indeed...clouded.

I saw an ad for a reality show, here in California. I applied and even received communication in reference

to the show.

My motivation for entering the show was simple.

"1,000,000.00!"

I didn't think about the consequences of winning the money. All I really saw....was dollar signs!

12 contestants would stay for 7 nights in a HAUNTED asylum.

I have struggled with the white page lately. I have struggled to put into words the changes and shifts of my reality. This

week I felt stuck in my head, even when I took a break from my projects: like trying to install new Customer Relationship Manger software and planning a golf tournament I was still there in my head. I was not engaged with the moment but rather engaged with thinking deeply about my projects, about life, about past conversations, struggling to connect in conversation in the moment.

My children have dentist appointments on Monday. I know this. I am planning on it. I did not need a reminder phone call. And, I’m not really sure I got one.

Writing is one of the loneliest professions there is.  You work alone, you motivate alone, you judge alone.  You don't really have someone to bounce ideas off of (unless you work in a team), you don't always have someone to tell you "this is ready to go out!", you're not sure when too much revising is killing you're writing.

Over the past few months, I've witnessed something quite amazing. People want to help each other...I really think that some of us thrive on helping others. Sure, no one is perfect, but I truly think that most people are good-we want other people to be happy, to succeed, and to do great things. This warms my heart and makes me smile.

I’d rather run barefoot and blindfolded over a snake-infested field than go shopping for a new computer. Buying a new car is less stressful. Doing your taxes is less mentally exhausting. At least you get money back in the end if you’ve done them right.

Several thoughts bounce around my head this morning. First, who are you Murray State, and what have you done to Vandy? Washington, why did I underestimate you? I shouldn’t have scratched you. Haven’t I learned always to go with my instinct? Ohio, well done! Perhaps my brother, a junior at OU, will get to experience your run to the Elite Eight just like I did when Davidson made it in 2008. This is no season like March Madness season.

THE KKK and the GOP

In August 2008, Derek Black, the then 19 year old son of former KKK grand wizard, Don Black, won a little noticed election for a Republican Executive Committee seat in Palm Beach County, Florida.

My good friend Monica , whom I almost never see ”in-her-beautiful-and-vibrant-person”, stopped by work today for a brief visit, cleverly disguised as a sales call. We were dishing about the point in conversation where folks tune people out and just STOP LISTENING! She recanted a funny story about her brother-in-law. One day at the beach, his wife kept nagging him about something senseless, over and over and over.
