overseas shopping requests

Wednesday, July, 30, 2008

my boymanfriendband is headed home-home tomorrow, to engerland. every time someone comes this way across the pond we request:

  • ribena – a blackcurrant drink
  • cadbury chocolates
  • walkers prawn cocktail crisps (sexy gary lineker is their spokesperson)
  • custard creams – cookies to drink with tea
  • and of course – tea

when he goes there, he always takes m&ms (they taste better from here), and chocolate chips (which they don’t really sell in eng). this time, however, his shopping list has some extra necessities.

just so you know what to be thankful for here in the good old united states of ‘merica, i thought you readers might enjoy a list of things desired in england:

  • half-gallon hefty ziploc bags
  • 1 lb dry roasted cashews, unsalted
  • 4 boxes nestle unsweetened baker’s chocolate
  • tums, forest fruit flavo(u)r
  • nestle chocolate chips
  • m&ms

if you migrate between countries (hell, even some regions of our own country), do you have required shopping lists? do tell!

...i know that my grandparents are not allowed to enter our house without at least a suitcase, yes a suitcase, full of white castle sliders.

bonus points to anyone who can tell me where pink sauce comes from.

You cracked me up with the "tums, forest fruit flavo(u)r"! He he he. I requests chocolates, of any kind, from Canada and Sultan's Halvah, Turkish Delight and dried, salted chic-peas from Turkey! Mmmm! I also beg for Boteje's mustard when my aunts from Illinois visit.

From Australia to the US: - Tim Tams (delicious chocolate wafer biscuits. Literally, a whole suitcase full comes over with my mother every time she visits me here in the US. Whatever I don't eat gets gradually distributed as barter or bribes. They're also good for buying friendship. Yes, they are that delicious) - Cadbury chocolate and Creme Eggs (as good in Australia as it is in England) - Vegemite (it's an Australian thing) From the US to Australia: - dance and skating wear - tights, leotards, etc - because the market is so small in Australia and so huge in the US - makeup, especially the high-end brands which are obscenely expensive at home - only-in-America brands (Abercrombie, Victoria's Secret, Anthropologie, etc) But the one thing I'll be importing when I fly home next week? Obama '08 t-shirts. "I do not wish women to have power over men, but over themselves" - Mary Wollstonecraft

Ok, first of all, I fully share your love of Gary Lineker. I watch Match of the Day with Simon just to get a look at his cutie face. When I go to England, I have to take: -Reese's cups -Lifesaver Creams And I request: -Pimm's (oh dear lord, can you say "summer in a glass?" -Cadbury's in all varieties (Cadbury's made at the Hershey factory in Pennsylvania is NOT the same) -PG Tipps -Fisherman's Friend cough drops -Wright's Coal Tar soap for my dad -Boots Botanics facial products - which you can now get from Target!

daughter REQUIRES Mars candy bars... I found wrappers around the house for months after she returned from Scotland this spring... fortunately we've found they're sold in Canada as well, which burdens skirt staffer Stephanie when she goes home.

I unfortunately don't get to travel regularly to other countries, but I have a good friend in Shanghai who takes a full suitcase of Hershey's bars (she makes a great pie), pasta sauces, and most importantly, tampons, every time she returns to China from a trip home. My cousin and his fiance live in a small city in Mexico and she recently loaded up with bags of brown sugar to take back. She also had things like dog toys and such, but the sugar was the funniest.

Hey, my husband is from Liverpool, and we stock up big time when we go there for a visit: Walkers shortbread, chocolate fingers, custard, Indian spices, oh, and those Flake candy bars (have you tried one?) Brilliant. Um, we also bring home lots of soccer t-shirts etc...And mint sauce for our lamb dinners. Thanks, I loved your essay. :)

Tuning in from South America, the number one item I have begged the boyf to mail is... tampons. You have no idea how you would miss them had they dropped off the planet. I would also kill for a cup of chai tea and I had my first taste of wheat bread yesterday (in about a month and a half).
