Maybe low expectations really are the key to happiness. Whatever happened, I don’t want to look too closely. I went to see Mamma Mia! last night and had a blast.
Yes, it’s ridiculous. Totally implausible casting. Plot slightly more gripping than a Michael Jackson video. I don’t really like ABBA. Not a fan of musicals.
No matter.
I laughed. A lot. I almost joined in the applause as the credits rolled. I wish I’d enjoyed the Sex & The City movie half this much.
Not that you’ll like it. Maybe you’re a sophisticated movie goer (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Maybe you, too, should keep your expectations low.
But I agree with this movie critic at Slate who writes: “What's great about Mamma Mia! is its complete disconnect from cool.”
And I think A.O. Scott puts it well in his review for the New York Times: “worrying about dignity is for newbies and amateurs.”
And since we’re not worrying about dignity here, let me add: you get free popcorn when you sign up for the Regal Crown Card at the theater atop Richland Mall.
