It wasn’t the sickly sweet smell of melted sugar on hot dough (although that didn’t hurt). What it was, was the huge, gorgeous smile on the woman behind the counter at Krispy Kreme on Peace Street.
The skirt! team had a (very exciting, more details later) meeting this morning, and I had promised them yesterday I’d bring them some baked goodies to munch on while we brainstormed for the upcoming months. Well, not surprisingly, last night I got home and crashed, and there was no baking in the Dwight house. This morning, regretting my laziness, I stopped at the Double K on the way in to work to pick up a box of donut holes. As soon as I walked through the door, the lovely, braided lady behind the corner greeted me with a “Good morning! How are you?”
“Great,” I answered, still wiping the sleep from my eyes.
“I’d love to treat you to a donut today,” she said. “I’m going to go get a fresh one and I’ll be right back.”
I stood there, confused, wondering if she was serious, and trying to calculate the price per donut hole for a 24-pack. Momentarily, she came bounding back up to the counter with a hot, sticky, fresh donut, just for me. “I hope you have a great day!” she said.
“Wow...thanks.”
And there I stood, eating my free donut, glaze sticking to my chin and dropping onto my shirt, reminded why half my heart is profoundly loyal to my homeland and its “service with a smile” attitude. No matter how bad the economy gets, how scary the streets, how outrageous the fuel prices...I hope we never lose this part of us.

this blog. But I just *had* to read it, didn't I?
The pic of the doughnut almost sent me into sensory overload. I've been banned from wheat products, but (sigh) I can't pass the Charleston, SC Krispy Kreme without stopping when the "Hot n' Fresh" light is on. No m'am.
On another note, I'm glad you were fortunate enough to run into some kindness that early in the morning. :) There isn't much that a kind smile, a warm doughnut and melty sugar can't cure. (O.K. that was asinine. Of course doughnuts can't cure cancer, A.I.D.S, heart disease or patch up the ozone layer. . .but you know what I mean!)

I went to college in Winston-Salem and had the opportunity to intern at the Krispy Kreme corporate office, and it was amazing. They have this philosophy about making a "magic moment" out of even the tiniest customer encounter. Looks like you were on the receiving end of your own magic moment!

Krispy Creme always catches my eye! Oh, I can taste the sticky sugar on my tongue. I agree, with all the icky stuff in the world, there are still good people out there...I think of what Anne Frank said, "People are basically good." I must believe this! Thanxs for the sweeeet story. :)
