the re-decorating bug

Wednesday, June, 25, 2008

bit me! I just moved into a new apartment about a month and a half ago, and I am having some major decorating anxiety. (They actually write about how to control decorating anxiety in home magazines. How awesome.)

Anyway, I have some major problems...

First of all, I have 2 rambunctious kitties. One tears up the couch sides, and the other tears up the door frames (I guess it feels like tree bark on her claws, I don’t know.) I’m super against getting them declawed because I read that it’s like cutting off a human’s fingers to the first knuckle and that’s downright inhumane. I never really considered that anyway though, because my cat Midnight damn near hyperventilates every time I take her in the car to the vet. So, one side of my couch is torn up. I bought it used, (thankgoodness!) but it’s still no excuse for the ragged material on one side of the couch. I need couch covers. My question is, where is the best place to get ones that fit? Expensive and goofy fitting couch covers will barely solve the problem.

I also need to do something about my bare walls. I thought of covering them all in etsy.com artwork (I’m still pretty serious about doing this) but I think that might end up costing more than several hundred dollars considering how much wall space I have going on right now...suggestions?

Show me your lovely apartment and home decorations! I love inspiration.

Your situation sounds disturbingly similar to mine. I have a cat midnight who also hyperventilates on the way to the vet. I had my suspicions of car-related foul play between her and her previous owners, but its oddly comforting to know that the hyperventilation is a kitty thing verses the acting out of a previously abused cat. And I too had another cat with a penchant for destroying furniture, doors and door frames. It got to the point where we had to screw pieces of clear plastic to the doors so that our little kitty wouldn't claw his way straight through. What we did to limit the clawing was to put a claw-board/thing with catnip near the doors or places where they claw so as to divert their attention. As for the art work, sometimes you can get cheap and really great looking fabric on sale at Jo-Anns. Get a variety that sort of match and you can put them in inexpensive frames. Or for a more personal touch, my current project is to take some pics of trip I took to Maine (both in color and black and white and various sizes) and frame them with similar color and style frames and put them up all together. Its kind of eclectic but also cohesive. Happy decorating!

That is so smart! I'm going to do that! I think plastic on the doorframes just might work. My mom was saying to adhere carpet to the doorframe but I think that might make me look like "cat lady" herself. Clear plastic sounds way better looking. And the material idea is great! That will help give me some more texture. Yeah, Midnight has always panted with her tongue out everytime I take her in a car--and I drove her cross-country over a year ago. I was sooo afraid she was going to stop breathing. But I sprayed some of that herbal comfort stuff in her carrier with catnip and she relaxed a little bit. But her eyes bug out and everything. She's always been that way and I've had her since she was like a few weeks old, so I think some cats are just wired to not ride in cars (who woulda thought? hehe)~Sara
