Hollis is coming! Hollis is coming!

Thursday, November, 6, 2008

Hollis Gillespie. Heard of her? If you’re in Atlanta or Charlotte and you haven’t... for shame. She wrote a weekly column for Creative Loafing for... well... ever, until recently, anyway. She’s now writing and blogging for Atlanta Magazine. She’s also the author of three books – Trailer Trashed, Confessions of a Recovering Slut (and other love stories) and Bleachy Haired Honky Bitch (tales from a bad neighborhood. AND, she offers writing seminars for we writers.

Hollis’ Shocking Real Life Writing Academy will be in Charlotte on Feb. 1, 2009, and in Atlanta on Nov. 16 an Dec. 14. The cost is $175 and worth every dime, so stop lallygagging and get signed up. She doesn’t have the February date on her site yet, but if you ask real nice I bet she’ll go ahead and take your money and save your place.

My friend, Kati, and I attended one of her Charlotte seminars this year and it was great – and not just because she forced us to drink gallons of mimoas and eat hummus. We learned a ton and, thanks to Hollis, her friend Grant Henry and a swift kick in the behind, are both working hard on our writing careers – more inspired than ever.

I haven't been to a writing work-shop for years, and this author sounds like my cup of tea. I would buy her books just cuz I like the titles!!!! Writing instructors always tell us to use a Great first line to catch the reader's attention...but I go for the title, as well!! Did you say you are going to this workshop? ~if so, please write a blog on it! I would love to hear ALL obout it, and I am sure the other girls would, too. :)

Hollis is an old friend of mine and you will LOVE LOVE LOVE her, Kim! Read all of her books. My friends and I have a drinking game with her Creative Loafing columns - (1) to see how many grafs it takes her to curse and, since that is generally Paragraph Number ONE, (2) to take a swig each time she says f***. Haha. She's a riot. "Trust Life's unfolding..."

I haven't read Trailer Trashed yet... I know, I suck! But the other two are both hilarious and endearing. Part of what makes Hollis so wonderful to read is that she pours her innards onto the page for all to see. Sometimes it's shocking, sometimes it's outrageous and sometimes you'll cry-- but you will definitely keep turning the page.
