I was at a 3 day intuition workshop at the Omega Institute in upstate New York this weekend. It was fabulous and I promise to blog more about it soon. It was hot and humid and the room we were in was causing some people (including myself) to hallucinate. To get back at 30 people visualizing a cooler temperature, we ended up nearly freezing too death. So much for peace and understanding.
Saturday before I went to the all day workshop, I heard of Paul Newman’s passing. It made me sad because he could have walked thru the halls of Congress and made mincemeat out of most of the people who represent us. Without being a blow hard , but by being Paul Newman. The man. The essence of good and decent.
I have to admit that I thought he got sexier with age – just like me. Okay, he really did. Those sparkling blue eyes that I only saw on one other face – that of my father’s face (his kids got what appears to be water mixed with mud when it came to our irises) could stop you in his tracks. My father’s eyes made a few women get stupid around him in front of my mother just like i am sure they did to Joanne Woodward. Maybe a few more.
But Paul Newman was a man of all seasons. He acted damn well, raced cars, probably drank a beer too many (like my father) and made a difference in the lives of children. You just had to love the man for all he did.
At 83, he might sound like an old man to the inexperienced. But age matters little when you are giving the chance and also the responsibility to make the lives of others better.
So rest in peace, you remarkable human being. And thanks for all you did. I am just glad that I was walking the earth when you graced it.
Raindrops keep falling from my eyes.

Yes, Elizabeth, Paul Newman was one of the last "good men" out there. The world will truly be a little less because of his passing. One of my favorite movies is "Cat on the Hot Tin Roof!" Ohhhhh, it's getting hot in my office!! ") Have a great day, girl.

Elizabeth - I'm right there with you in regards to the heavenly Mr. Newman. I've been in love with him since I was about 7 years old and had no idea what a "crush" was. I was watching "Cool Hand Luke" on TBS (thanks, Ted Turner!)and looked up at my grandmother and said "I love him." And I did. I loved him all through the days of Lief Garrett, Michael J. Fox, Axl Rose. When all of my girlfriends were crushing on River Phoenix, I was still mooning over Paul Newman (and Robert Redford. . .who I later married. Giggle.) Mr. Newman was an exceptional human being who embodied compassion, being a gentlemen, being reasonable. . .so, go ahead and cry. The world is a sadder place for the loss of him. xoxo

don't mean to disappoint you, but Robert Redford and I have been secretly married since sometime after my 12th birthday.. the mid-70s? He's just not your type. As for Newman, his larger-than-life personality was so magnetic. I interviewed people a few years ago who blamed him for "ruining" my hometown by making a movie about the Boston Marathon (actually, his wife, Joanne Woodward, starred in the movie, but Newman messed things up just by being there). What star power would it take to draw people to an event DECADES after you'd been there? But they remember. Just as I remember the first time I saw Butch Cassidy during a rainy family vacation on Cape Cod. Fell for them both.

(giggle) No. . .seriously! I married a taller, more muscular version of Mr. Redford. I swear. Without fail, my husband gets approached by women we do not know (I don't want to call them "strange women". . .cuz they're perfectly nice) and they'll say "Has anyone ever told you that you look like Robert Redford?" It's almost as awesome as being married to the REAL Robert Redford. Just. . .taller. Mmmmm. . .Butch Cassidy. GREAT movie. (sigh) Those two faces. . .heaven.

Amy, lemme get this straight: You've been hitched to both Robert Redford AND SITC's Aiden? For crying out loud, woman, leave a little somethin' somethin' for the rest of womankind... hehe "Trust Life's unfolding..."

(giggle) Yeppers. And believe me, Aiden was no angel!
Mistah Redford, on the other hand, is. If it makes you feel any better, I once dated a guy who looked like Fisher Stevens. Eeek! (Sorry for the thread-jack, Elizabeth!)

I named one of my cats "Hubble" after the character Redford played in "The Way We Were." I am finally admitting that. For years, I denied that the name came from the movie.
I was a twenty something working in NYC and I ran out on a Friday to cash my paycheck. Instead of going west, I went east. When I realized it, I cursed under my breath and proceeded west. I felt someone's presence next to me.
I looked up only to find Robert Redford walking next to me.
I was a cool chick and went into action. Instead of throwing myself at him, I just walked down the street with him. Women would walk towards us and I could tell by their expressions that they wanted to know who the bitch was walking with Mr. Redford.
We walked until his car pulled up. We walked towards the car and turned around and smiled at me. He knew damn well what I was doing and it didn't bother him.
I am nearly 5'9" and he was taller than me - for all the people who think he is short. Woody Allen is. Redford is not.
Like it was yesterday.

I am still so sad about it. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of my fave all time movies, and The Sting (also him & Robert Redford), is a close second. And he was just such a decently good person. But, now I can smile at the all the conversations he's having with my Paw-Paw Bryan, who when he was young looked just like Errol Flynn with blue eyes. :)
