Sportswriter Mary Garber

When I went off to college with the intention of being a sports broadcaster, it was still a novel idea for women to cover sports. Imagine what it must have been like for
Mary Garber, who started covering sports in my home state 60 years ago.
The
Los Angeles Times writes, “In 1946, despite having proper credentials, she had to cover a Duke University football game while sitting with the coaches' wives.”
A five-footer who weighed just 95 pounds, Garber still managed to push her way into ACC locker rooms.
Garber died over the weekend and obituaries in the
New York Times and the
Los Angeles Times recap a life that must have been
one big adventure. You can listen to an interview with Garber
here.
