Hurry out of here, Hanna

Saturday, September, 6, 2008

I hope Hanna hurries on out of here tomorrow, because I’m supposed to do a reading of All on Account of You in Wake Forest, at The Storyteller’s Bookstore at 3:00 p.m. Even though Hanna’s gotten a little stronger in the past few hours, she’s supposed to scoot up the coast quickly, and be well into VA by tomorrow afternoon.

Storyteller’s is a cool little store and this is its grand opening. My family is very entrepreneurial, and I like to see new ventures do well, so I feel bad for the owner, Drew, who has been sweating out the weather all week. There are events in Raleigh as well, so this was definitely not the best weekend for Little Miss Hanna to show her stuff. I guess we can't complain too much, since this is the first almost-hurricane to hit the eastern coast since Charlie in 2004.

Having lost my favorite car to Fran, I’m not a fan of hurricanes. At the time I had a sweet little teal-colored Mazda Protege, with 30,000 miles on it, ONE PAYMENT away from being paid off. I LOVED driving that car around town with the sunroof open. I bought it in October, and after it turned cold, I ran the heat so I could stay warm but still have the sunroof open. The night Fran came through, we had brought my mom to our house to weather the storm with us, and her car was in the driveway, so I had parked mine in the cul-de-sac.

My hubby was afraid it wouldn’t be safe there, so he moved it into the driveway behind my mom’s car, where a tree fell on it at one in the morning. Let’s just say I wasn’t too happy with him the next day (even though, in reality, a tree could have just as easily fallen on it in the cul-de-sac). After that we had nine of the pine trees which were closest to the house removed. Which wasn’t cheap.

And then we moved.

Anyway, I’m going to bed and hoping for the best. Thank God this house has a garage, and both cars are tucked safely inside.

Batten down the hatches, everyone. And if the weather clears and you are bored by tomorrow afternoon, come to Wake Forest and stop by the store.
